ISO's AMD 1:2024 amendment
In February 2024, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published an update that adds mandatory climate change requirements to all management system standards, including ISO 27001 and ISO 9001, within clauses 4.1 (understanding the organization and its context) and 4.2 (understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties).
What exactly is climate change?
It refers to the long-term transformation of Earth's weather conditions, caused by natural and human factors. Picture the Earth as a greenhouse: the sun's heat comes in and keeps it habitable. But by burning fossil fuels we release additional gases that trap more heat than normal, causing glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise, and a higher frequency of events like hurricanes and droughts.
The greenhouse effect
Part of the sun's energy is reflected back into space, while the rest is absorbed and re-emitted by greenhouse gases — water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide — which keep the Earth warm enough for life as we know it. The problem arises when human activities, especially burning fossil fuels and deforestation, increase these concentrations and throw off the balance of the climate system.
The path to net-zero emissions
Achieving the net-zero emissions goal means maintaining a balance between greenhouse gases emitted and those removed from the atmosphere: every emission must be offset by an equivalent removal of CO₂. It is, today, our most powerful tool for fighting the climate crisis, with environmental, economic, social, and health benefits.
